This course equips participants with the skills to handle people safely and effectively, covering risk assessment, equipment uses, and techniques to uphold the dignity of individuals.

Course Objectives

  • Healthcare workers, including nurses and carers, involved in the movement and support of patients or residents.

 

Pre-Course Requirements

  • Proficiency in English.
  • Wear suitable clothing for hands-on activities.
  • Inform the instructor of any relevant medical conditions.
  • Adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Ensure the availability of required equipment (e.g., wheelchair, hoist, bed).
  • Notify us of any specific learning needs.

 

Course Content

  1. Legislation & Regulations:
    • Safety Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005
    • General Application Regulations 2007
  2. Topics Include:
    • Ergonomics
    • Musculoskeletal System
    • Anatomy and Function of the Spine
    • Posture
    • Principles of Safe Handling
    • Basic Lifting Techniques
    • Practical Exercises (e.g., hoist operations, patient transfers)

 

Instructors

  • Qualifications:
    • At least QQI Level 7 in relevant fields.
    • Train-the-Trainer QQI Level 6 or higher.
    • Certified People Moving Instructor.
    • Trained in Infection Control and Safeguarding Adults.

 

Training Methods

  • PowerPoint presentations.
  • Hands-on lifting techniques and demonstrations.
  • Practice with equipment.

 

Assessment

  • Participation: Full involvement in practical exercises is necessary for course completion.

 

Certification

  • Certificate: Issued by Phoenix STS Training, valid for two years.

  • Maximum Participants: 10 (to ensure effective practice and skill development).
  • Duration: Approximately 7 hours.
