Our Manual Handling Course is customizable to fit the needs of specific workplaces. It’s an interactive program combining both theoretical knowledge and practical sessions. Participants are evaluated by the instructor on their safe handling techniques and the fundamental principles of safe moving and lifting.

 

Key Facts:

· Over 30% of accidents reported to the HSA each year are due to manual handling incidents.

· 50% of those who experience back pain while off work have a recurrence within 12 months.

· 5% of back injuries can result in long-term disability.

· Manual handling injuries are common in both men and women.

 

The Manual Handling definition is provided in the Guide to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, specifically Chapter 4 of Part 2, titled “Manual Handling of Loads.”

We offer Public Manual Handling Courses at our Longford training center and online. Please note that the online course serves as an awareness session, and additional practical training is required to complete certification. Contact us to arrange this.

Course Aims:

  • Educate learners on the concept of manual handling.
  • Highlight the extent of back pain and its causes.
  • Teach participants safe methods for lifting and moving loads.
  • Emphasize strategies to reduce manual handling risks, including organizational solutions, assisted handling techniques, and the use of mechanical aids.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Identify unsafe or hazardous lifting conditions.
  • Perform a manual handling risk assessment (TILE method).
  • Apply the 8 key principles of safe lifting.
  • Understand Ireland’s manual handling legislation.
  • Learn basic anatomy of the spine.
  • Implement strategies to minimize workplace manual handling injuries.
  • Ensure employer compliance with relevant legal requirements.

 

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for any staff involved in manual handling tasks. Regulation 68 of the 2007 Regulations defines manual handling as:

“Any transportation or support of a load by one or more workers, including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying, or moving a load. These activities may pose a risk of injury, particularly back injuries, due to the load’s characteristics or unfavorable ergonomic conditions.”

 

Pre-Course Requirements:

  • The course is delivered in English, so participants must be fluent.
  • Please inform us of any specific learning needs in advance.
  • Participants should wear suitable clothing for a practical, interactive session.

  • General Application Regulations 2007
  • Ergonomics and musculoskeletal systems
  • Spinal anatomy, structure, and function
  • Posture and the 8 principles of safe handling
  • Practical lifting and moving techniques
  • Fitness for manual handling
  • Practical test and evaluation

 

Trainers:

All our instructors hold a minimum QQI Level 8 in their field, along with a Train the Trainer QQI Level 6 or higher.

 

Training Methods:

  • Classroom-based presentations.
  • Demonstrations and practical exercises.
  • Ongoing assessment throughout the course.

 

Full participation is required to receive certification.

 

Certification:

Upon successful completion of the Manual Handling Course, learners will receive a Phoenix STS Training Certificate, valid for three (3) years.

 

Class Size:

Due to the skill-focused nature of the course, class sizes are limited to a maximum of 12 participants.
